Each living creature in the world of Sunrise Doll is defined by its soul. Souls are metaphysical objects that are created whenever new life is conceived in the Home realm. As long as the soul's bearer is alive, the soul resides deep within their body, invisible and intangible. Because of how difficult the travel between realms is, nearly every soul spends the entire lifetime of its host body in Home, unaware of the existence of other realms.
When the owner dies, their soul escapes. Such soul is an opaque, shining, sparkling, weightless black orb, and it bears the intelligence, memories and decision-making patterns of the late lifeform. In its freed state, the soul is completely blind, deaf, mute and cannot smell or touch, leaving it completely one-on-one with its own thoughts and fantasies.
If the freed soul spends enough time aimlessly floating in Home, the realm's bountiful nature allows the soul to slowly accumulate material around itself. The soul can feel and manipulate the material, and strives to shape it into its preferred body as best as its extremely limited abilities allow. This results in souls encasing themselves in foggy shells that resemble various animals, plants, humans, mushrooms, and other lifeforms, which can be thought of as high fantasy ghosts. The shell allows its soul to loosely interact with the world, in a desperate act of clinging to life.
Each soul has its own finite subrealm within Heaven and a place of banishment within Hell. When banished, the soul is granted a body, but is petrified on the spot and subsequently not allowed to leave a tiny subrealm within Hell even if the petrification is dispelled.
